How to layer necklaces without the tangle
Layering looks effortless when the lengths, weights and pendants are planned. A simple formula, three ready-made stacks and the trick that stops chains knotting.

Layered necklaces look effortless in photos because someone planned them. The good news: the plan is short. It comes down to length, weight and one focal point.
The simple formula
- Start short. Your first piece sits at or just below the collarbone — a fine chain or a small pendant.
- Add a middle layer about 5 cm lower. This is where your focal pendant goes.
- Finish long (optional). A third piece another 5–8 cm lower adds length and movement.
Keep roughly 5 cm between layers. Closer than that and chains touch, tangle and look crowded.
Mix weights, not just lengths
Three identical fine chains blur together. Contrast is what makes layers readable:
- Fine + pendant: a delicate chain above a chain with a charm.
- Detail + clean: a chain with small stars or accents above a simple bar or drop.
- One statement only: pick one piece to be the star; let the others support it.
Three stacks to copy
The everyday two
A fine chain with small detail high up, and one clean pendant below. Works with shirts, tees and kurtas.
Try Stella Rêve at the collarbone with Amulét Bar below it — the stars add sparkle, the bar keeps it calm.
The playful three
Fine chain, a characterful pendant, then a longer drop. Good for weekends.
Pair Lumen Ray's teddy bear pendant with a fine-chain piece above and a floral pendant like Rosalique below.
The festive stack
Go richer for Diwali and weddings: a detailed piece at the top, a statement pendant in the middle, and keep the third layer simple so the look doesn't fight your outfit's embroidery.
Stop the tangle
- Leave the spacing. The 5 cm rule prevents most knots.
- Heaviest pendant lowest. Weight at the bottom keeps the stack hanging straight.
- Fasten one at a time, shortest first, and check the clasps sit at the back.
- Store them separately and fastened, never in a heap — see our care guide.
Match the neckline
- V-neck: layers that follow the V, getting longer as they go.
- Round neck: short layers that sit above the neckline.
- Collared shirt: open the top two buttons and keep layers short.
- High neck: skip layering and wear one long pendant over the top.

Questions
How many necklaces should I layer?
Two or three is the sweet spot. Two looks polished for work; three feels styled for evenings and weekends.
How do I stop layered necklaces tangling?
Leave clear space between lengths, mix chain weights, put the heaviest pendant lowest, and fasten each chain separately. A small necklace spacer clasp also helps.
Can I mix gold and silver when layering?
You can, but for a calm, put-together look keep to one tone. All CHICX pieces are gold-tone, so they layer together easily.
What neckline is best for layering?
Open necklines — V-necks, scoop necks, shirts with the top buttons open and kurtas with a slit — show layers best.
